Project Overview
A new 20,000-seat multi-purpose arena in the Mountain West — home to an NBA franchise, NHL tenant, and 100+ annual concerts/events — required an exterior signage program that transforms between game-day spectacle (broadcast-visible, sponsor-prominent) and non-game-day civic presence (subtle, wayfinding-focused) within 90 minutes.
Scope
- Primary monument pylons: Four 25m structural steel pylons at cardinal entries — full-height RGB LED mesh facades (10mm pitch, 6,500 nits), capable of full-motion video, team colors, sponsor assets, and civic messaging; DMX/Art-Net control synced to venue show control
- Dynamic sponsorship blade signs: 12 double-sided projecting blades on podium facade — snap-in LED cassettes (3.9mm pitch) for sponsor logo rotation, synchronized with game clock via Daktronics API
- Roof-mounted identity: 18m illuminated roof sign visible from interstate highway and airport approach — front-lit channel letters with RGB accent rings, FAA/ASR compliance
- Pedestrian wayfinding: 80 gate-identified blade signs with integrated NFC/QR for mobile ticket validation, color-coded by seating zone, ADA tactile/Braille
- Plaza donor recognition: 200m illuminated donor wall with backlit glass panels, programmable name cycling for legacy donors
- Emergency egress: photoluminescent/LED hybrid exit signage integrated with fire command center, NFPA 101 compliant
- Broadcast coordination: LED mesh refresh rate ≥3,840 Hz (flicker-free for 4K/8K broadcast), color calibrated to Rec.709/sRGB
Technical Specifications
- Monument pylons: structural steel A992, wind load ASCE 7-22 Risk Category III, seismic Zone 4
- LED mesh: IP66 front/IP54 rear, 10mm pitch, 6,500 nits, 16-bit grayscale, 3,840 Hz refresh
- Sponsorship blades: 3.9mm pitch, IP65, hot-swappable cassettes, 5,000 nits
- All exterior: powder coat (Tiger Drylac, 20-year), 316L hardware, UL 48 / UL 8750
- Control: GrandMA3 show control, Daktronics API, Art-Net/sACN, redundant fiber backbone
Result
Grand opening broadcast (ESPN/TNT) — monument pylons featured in 14 national broadcast shots. Sponsorship inventory sold out 6 months pre-opening — dynamic blade signs commanded 3.2× static rate. Game-day transformation achieved in 47 minutes (target <90). Non-game-day civic mode reduced light trespass complaints by 89% vs. previous venue. NFPA 101 / IEC 62368 certification with zero findings. The dual-mode system is now the franchise owner's standard for two upcoming arena projects.
