Project Overview
A top-tier Canadian research university with three campuses (main, health sciences, innovation park) totaling 200 hectares and 60+ buildings commissioned a master wayfinding and brand signage program to replace decades of ad-hoc signage that confused visitors, students, and emergency responders.
Scope
- Three illuminated gateway monuments at primary campus entries: 6m wide aluminum structural frames with push-through acrylic letter faces, internally illuminated with programmable RGBW LED for event/seasonal color changes
- Building identification standard: 2m halo-lit brushed stainless steel letters on all 60+ academic, research, and residence buildings — single specification, concealed standoff mounting
- Vehicular wayfinding: 45 double-sided directional signs with reflective vinyl graphics on aluminum composite panels, engineered for 120 km/h wind zones
- Pedestrian wayfinding: 120 blade signs and finger posts with tactile maps at key decision points, high-contrast typography meeting CNIB accessibility standards
- Digital directory kiosks: 12 interactive 55″ touchscreens with real-time room booking integration and accessible audio output
- Brand signage manual: 80-page specification document covering typography, color system, materials, illumination standards, and installation details for future campus expansion
Technical Specifications
- Gateway monuments: structural aluminum 6063-T5, wind load CSA S37-18, LED lifetime 100,000 hrs L70
- Building letters: 316L stainless steel, electro-polished finish, 12V DC MEAN WELL drivers, 0-10V dimming
- All exterior signs: powder coat finish (AkzoNobel Interpon D1036, 10-year warranty)
- Digital kiosks: Samsung OH55F displays, custom Wayfinding CMS, WCAG 2.1 AA compliant
Result
Post-occupancy survey showed 84% improvement in first-time visitor navigation confidence. The brand signage manual now governs all capital projects — three new research buildings already specified against the standard. Maintenance team reports 92% reduction in ad-hoc signage requests. The programmable gateway monuments have become campus landmarks, featuring in convocation livestreams and recruitment campaigns.
